Sustainable and Sassy - 5 sustainable fashion ideas

Sassi Swimwear Sustainable Fashion Blog Lily Swimsuit

Our Lily Swimsuit

We live in an paradoxical world where we know we need to seriously start thinking about our planet (or as we like to call it at Sassi HQ "treading lightly") but when it comes to fashion, anything with the word "eco" or "sustainable" in front of it automatically becomes unsexy or a little bit "hippie".

If you haven't seen it yet, we urge you to see Andrew Morgan's brilliantly watchable film "The True Cost". Along with Livia Firth and Lucy Siegle, he takes us to Bangladesh, China and America to show us what our obsession with fast fashion is costing the world. Just to give you a little taster, he tells us that the world now consumes 80 billion new pieces of clothing every year, which is 400% more than we did 20 years ago!

At Sassi we take our products and our earth seriously, and do everything we possibly can to ensure that our beautiful swimsuits and bikinis are made in the most sustainable and "gentle" way. Please do get in touch if you'd like to know more, we'd love to chat!

Without further ado, and sincerely hoping that we'll teach you something new - not just sound like another brand banging on about sustainability without any soul - we give you our:

5 Tips for Treading Lightly Everyday

(because for things to change it has to start with you and me)

 1) Take pleasure in shopping again - Truly consider your purchases and read up about the brand's history and the story of your design before rushing into your purchase. This also makes it much more fun to tell everyone when they ask where you got that "amazing outfit".

 2) Look at the care label - Always quickly check what your new clothing is made of. Anything 100% Viscose or Polyester won't last more than a year without losing shape and will also release harmful chemicals into the water system with every wash, which end up in the sea in fishes lungs. Invest in natural fabrics or fabrics that will stand the test of time (our fabric does exactly this, your Sassi Swimwear will last summer after summer).

3) Buy "Dry Clean Only" items like you would black truffles - Not only does dry cleaning cost you an arm and a leg every time, it costs the earth dearly too!

4) Hold a Clothes Swap with friends  - When you feel like you need a wardrobe refresh get everyone round, ask them to bring a few clothes they're tired of, lay everything out on the floor and get swapping. This is seriously fun, and we need to get better at understanding that "last season" doesn't mean "over".

5) Ask yourself " will I wear this 20 times?" - To truly help our wallets and our planet we need to dispose with this notion of "fast fashion". When did we become so obsessed with the fact that Kate Middleton always wears the same 4 coats? I long for a world when slow fashion isn't a novel idea, and it's frowned upon that you don't hang onto your favourite pieces and wear them again and again. Asking yourself this simple question every time is a great way to start shopping smarter.

At Sassi Swimwear we're hoping to become a brand where your favourite style will always be "in stock" and every design is a Classic. We will continue to add new designs and colours but hope to have designs you can come back to again and again without worrying that they're "last season".

Seasonal fashion is a huge contributor to the enormous waste that the fashion industry generates (the second largest polluter after Oil). The simple reason that a design is two months old shouldn't mean it must be discounted immediately and sold off cheap - this undervalues the beautiful workmanship that has gone into making your swimwear.
